Sea legs/land legs

The slip we've been in for the last few months is on the ICW. Lots of traffic and the boat is pretty constantly in motion. I'm used to it and sometimes have to look outside to see how bad we're being tossed. Sometimes a surprise when I'm pouring a glass of soda and when the glass is half full it tips over and rolls to the edge of the counter. Topside, different story. Gotta watch what's going on and keep my balance when on deck. Lately when I go to town and am in a building it seems as though the building is in motion. It's a little distracting and I find myself hoping that I'm not swaying or appeariing to others to have difficulty maintaining my balance. Anyone else experience this and what do you do about it if anything?

Oh yes, quite often, and so have other sailors since the beginning. Nothing much you can really do about it except adjust. It is one reason why writers used to speak of sailors' sort of rolling gate as they walked on land.

I remember having the rolling gait in my Navy days, but the feeling of being off balance when on shore is new to me. Maybe it's because this place where I'm tied up is kind of rolly. Also my masts are on the hard being refinished and that makes it more pronounced.

For a couple of days or so after coming off an ocean cruise, I find myself rocking in front of the computer monitor.

My most troublesome obstacle is going up and down stairs after coming ashore from long extended stays at sea. The steps never seem to be where my feet think they should be at first.

I have the same experience. I wonder what causes it? Maybe it has something to do with the inner ear needing time to adjust.

the worst is when you go ashore and have a hard time drinking your beer!

I think its a repetitive motion thing, When we were beating into close short waves for 8 hours heading into venice, we stopped at crowsnest fo rthe night, my wife sat there and rocked pretty damn violently to the point a lady who was a nurse walked over and asked if she was OK, she didnt even realize it and couldn't control it, went away after a few hours. I can remember being on a cheasapeake bay round bottom wood work boat when I was younger, no keel to keep it from rolling side to side. I would roll myself right out of bed at night for at least two days lol.

After being at sea for awhile on the research vessel Wicoma and finally moored. One of us looked out the port and commented on how much the pier is moving. It took a long moment before we realized the gafe.

Oh well, we went back to eating lunch.

Oh well, thankfully we don't get landsick and start throwing up all over.

Nearly as bad... after a very slow crossing to Horta... nearly 40days... I dinghied in and tied up... climbed the steps then promptly fell over at the top... hilarious...
Felt like I'd done the forehead on the stick and run round in circles game.... took a good 5mins giggling before I could stand up and walk into the clearing in office...

Never, remember the 1st time It happened to me. Someone had to tell me what was going on. This thread made me remember. Thanks for the smile

I just got home from delivering a boat from Florida to Antigua. I was standing in the bank waiting on line to deposit my check. The bank was rocking pretty badly and I fell down. All the other patrons thought I was drunk. I couldn't stop laughing for 5 minutes.
