San Blas Islands

Are the San Blas Islands a safe place to cruise in July & August?

In what way do you mean "safe"?

As in safe from "hurricanes"?

Depends on what direction you're coming from?

If you're sailing in from the north, it should be safe.

If you're coming across the Atlantic ocean, say from the USA. Then you just might have a problem with running into a hurricane?

If that's the answer you're looking for. I believe, that's the outcome you "might" face while out there? Since it is during hurricane season!!

The San Blas themselves are out of the hurricane zone but if you are coming from the U.S. , Bahamas, or western Carribean you will have some degree of exposure in the "zone" just when things are starting to "heat" up. Keep an eye on the weather and haul ass.

Clarification

I'm planning on going through the canal (west to east) in June and would like to spend part of the hurricane season in the San Blas Islands and part of it in Cartagena. Then, in November, on to St. Lucia via the ABC's.

I would like to know if that's a reasonably safe (from tropical storms) and sensible plan.

Fritz.

If you stay around there during hurricane season. You should be just fine.

But as long you make sure you find a safe protected harbor. You should be fine!!
