Rise of the Cat People

Whether u are getting a family boat, or chartering out, a Sailing Cat is the trend here in Asia. There's space for the family, and certainly great destinations in this part of the world.

Very few small cats. Geminis have disappeared. One or two old Endeavorcats but most of the cats are new and large. Now the majority of boats is still monohull's but the Bahamian cruising scene is certainly changing.

Just an observation so don't all jump on me. Not meant to start ( or continue) the cat/mono war. Just an observation. As far as new hulls are concerned its all cats.

Most are US flagged but not all. Kiwis, Aussies (boats bought in US) quite a few South Africans. From Europe French , German and Swiss. Haven't seen a Dutch one. Maybe the Dutch don't like cats.

I'm surprised on the flagging? South Africans always seemed to fly a Dutch flag since heritage gives them dual citizenship. At one time it was because the SA flag was not popular in many parts of the world. If I were from SA and had Dutch citizenship I wonder if that would let me have the reciprocal medical care afforded EU partners in many holdings throughout the world?

Just a thought for SA sailors.

No question cats make a great choice for charter, beds and heads and lots of space to move around.

I have a white neurotic cat my wife wants to take aboard. Perhaps I can use it for an anchor buoy.

Most Dutch cruisers are still monohullers.
Probably has to do with cats being rare here -what you never see, you're less likely to buy?-, and very expensive in marinas will keep it that way for a while yet.

what makes great destination not great any more is too much crowd. Hope asian rate of cat purchases will not be too great.

I have found that cruising destinations require a 48 hour or longer leg to get there, especially if to windward, reverses the percentages.
