Question on Sailboat Delivery - Norfolk VA to New Bern NC

We're looking at buying a 38' sailboat in Norfolk VA and would need it sailed to New Bern NC where it would be docked. We would need to hire a captain to sail it down there for us. Wondering ballpark what it would cost and how many days it would take?

Re: Question on Sailboat Delivery - Norfolk VA to New Bern NC

Using the ICW it’s about 210 miles, 3-4 days, depending on weather, and stopping each night. Mostly a motor boat ride, although there’s some sailing to be had in the sounds, and up the Neuse river. I’ve run that stretch at night with another crew member, so it could be done in 2 days. A bit further going outside, not sure what it would be like heading south around Hatteras this time of year.

Looks like another 100 miles if going outside.

Thanks, any idea as to cost for a captain and mate? I would probably also be onboard for the trip. I recently got my ASA 101 cert but new to sailing and so this would be good training plus to learn all about the boat.

Re: Question on Sailboat Delivery - Norfolk VA to New Bern NC

Each Captain will have his own charges, based on a lot of things, like the need for crew, and the boat, and the trip.

Normally I charge $300 per 24 hours (including travel time), plus all expenses. Some charge more, some less.

This looks like it would be 4 days, maybe 5 including a day at the front end to prep the boat. All assuming the boat is ready to go, and the draft and mast height are suitable for an ICW delivery.

If you are buying a new to you boat, there are many questions you should ask your delivery guy.

Post in the crew forum and see who responds.

Why not "deliver" it yourself?

It's all on the AICW and most of it is in protected waters (Albemarle Sound and the Neuse river can be rough at times).

We have made that trip several times and it's a piece of cake.

Here’s the thing about that run. There are not a lot of repair or haul out places on that route.

#1-Get tow insurance. We had an exhaust elbow break off in the Albemarle and took a 10 hour tow to Wancheese.

#2-Plan on a shake down cruise, or two, where you pick it up. Far better to find the gremlins where you have access to repair facilities.

#3-Deliver it yourself. If needed take an experienced crew with you. I think the hardest part of that route is from Norfolk to Great Bridge, because of traffic and negotiating bridges. If you are new it can be intimidating. Hell, I don’t like it. But after that it is real easy, as long as weather does not kick up.

#4-Don’t plan on pushing real hard. Take time to enjoy the ride and do things at your own pace. It is an almost 100% motor route. Enjoy it.

If you are light on training and experience it might be wise to spend more for someone who can teach you about your boat.

Done the ICW route half a dozen times (we live in New Bern). Might be an option to ask for experienced crew - it’ll probably cost you less, picking up expenses.

Re: Question on Sailboat Delivery - Norfolk VA to New Bern NC

I have done this route multiple times. from 58' Motor Yacht to 30' Sailboat. On smaller boats I usually do it single handed.
I would be open to the trip as "experienced Crew" as my USCG 100 Tin Ticket has expired.
DM me or email scottydaum@gmail.com if you would like to discuss.
I am easy going and have taught many new boat owners basic boat handling, and sailing skills.
I don't know it all, but am willing to share what I do know, and enjoy it.
Either way best of luck to ya!
by the way.......I seriously suggest avoiding the outside route. This is not an area to test a new Skipper and a new to you vessel. That can come later.

Re: Question on Sailboat Delivery - Norfolk VA to New Bern NC

I have made that trip many times (Irwin 32 Endeavor 40), but am currently boatless. If you have an interest I would consider coming up and helping make the trip just for the time on the water.
I agree with the comments on lack of available services. I also lost an exhaust elbow on this stretch, but patched it with a prepreg fiberglass "bandage".
Best emergency kit item I ever bought.
PM me if you would like to discuss

Re: Question on Sailboat Delivery - Norfolk VA to New Bern NC

Good afternoon noticed your post on needing someone to deliver a sailboat. I currently live in Oriental NC which is close to Newbern. I have a friend who is a Captain with 30 + years of sailing experience. I've also been on two deliveries with him both offshore and ICW. If you haven't found someone already and would like his information to speak with him please feel free to send me a email with your contact info. Emilybradford1964@gmail Have a enjoyable day.
