The
Catana thread was interesting from a performance discussion. Lots of good discussion and review of polars and what the sailing capabilities of different
boats are. An interesting question that was beginning to emerge was payload. Who carries how much and how it effects performance. Gideon published polars at multiple weights but I did not see the performance affects in other polars. So the question begs to be asked how much
gear do you carry and how does it affect your speed.
At full load we carry:
Sails, line, blocks, handles,
gear... ~2000#
Fuel and
water (500 gallons) ~4000#
Spares, tools, consumables ~1000#
Clothing, bedding,
safety gear ~500#
Toys,
dinghy, chocks ~1000#
Ground tackle: 700 foot line, 3 anchors, 550 foot 3/8 chain, spare
windlass parts ~1000#
Food,
galley gear,
propane, ~300#
Us (4 people) ~600#
Misc, stuff I forgot ~500#
Our total ~ 10,900# or 4950 kg
We are a bit slower when heavy, total payload is 17% of
displacement.
