Insurance

Hi,

I used to sail years ago and am thinking of getting back into it, this time buying my own boat. However, I am a bit confused about insurance.

Specifically, I heard getting a 40 year old sailboat insured nowadays is impossible. Fine, but if you only want to get liability for an older boat, is it still impossible?

Also, to get liability insurance, what is required? Meaning, I read that if you want total insurance and are a newbie boat owner, it's not going to happen.

Any specifics would be great.

I am wanting to buy an older boat less than 20k and have only liability on it. Sail in Florida and then as my skills come back further, much further.

Much thanks

Re: Insurance

My wife and I just bought a 1980 Endeavour 32 and went through it. Yes, if you want hull insurance it's going to be a hassle and expensive, but it is possible.

We settled on just liability and paid $187 for 100K coverage through Progressive. I'm probably going to up that to 300K. But it was as easy, a 15 minute phone call and it was done.

They did not care about experience, although any classes would have gotten us a small discount, but it was no problem. So don't let that part worry you bro !

Re: Insurance

Thank you for the answer.

But can you sail anywhere with that or are you limited to where you can go with it?

Re: Insurance

Calling insurance agency brokers will get you actual answers or you could rely upon anecdotal stories from people, all of whom have unique factors which can affect insurance.
