I just read this while watching the snow fall all day yesterday. Fun and quick read. Also, I don't have a Kindle, only a Nook, but was able to download the Kindle app for my PC and read it on my laptop.

But can I say, as a chick, that the author's approach to his love life - in the book and on that other thread - is blah, blah, blah, who cares? I know I'm getting myself in hot water here, but if he sets his standards at a place where he can't get the women he wants, how can he complain when women, too, are picky at his expense? I get it that there is behavior that is just mean. I don't condone that AT ALL. But I found that part of the book kind of beside the point. He says this is just the way he is and he's not going to change. Great. He has that right. So why is it then worth so many pages....

Agree with Kache Walk somewhat, the "I've given up on women" part, while perhaps necessary to explain the decision to sail RTW, could have been pruned down a bit.

Well in his defense, he admits his own hypocrisy. I think he's an idiot (on that subject). The best part of the book is the fact that he just lays it out :-)

As to the composter, that failure was a result of misuse, intentional I think! (those sneaky women!) The whole idea is to keep the urine out, I think there were too many people making way too much pee! Sounded nasty, that's for sure :-(

Good points, El Gato. Part of what I liked about reading the book is his willingness to make fun of himself. A good quality to have.

But I'm with you, why choose such high standards when it clearly keeps you from a piece of happiness you've identified you want for yourself? I wondered whether he is so inexperienced with relationships that he doesn't realize that physical beauty is important, but only a part of attraction. Would such a smart, resourceful guy be happy with a stunner who happened to be unable to carry on an interesting conversation, laugh at your jokes or be capable is some way?

What gets me is how folks seem to talk about the woman factor above most else when discussing his book. I was following the thread over on Sailnet also... I think perhaps we all wish him to be somehow different, to better represent the intelligent & often witty writing style he clearly has.

Well, at least you can't say he isn't honest about his shortcomings... although, perhaps a little too honest at times!

I look forward to reading his next book, I really found the style of writing quite refreshing.

I saw a picture of Glen on another site and I don't think he looks awkward at all, he's an average looking guy, a little on the husky side but by no means ugly..
You may be onto something with experience, he needs to give himself a break regarding his presence. He's a sharp guy with a nice personality, a nice woman will find him if he lightens up a little, he needs to stop looking for that Harvard grad super model though...

Well...to continue a theme......I have to wonder if the problem is a compound of TV/Movie examples, and some issues with childhood? I'm pretty average...5'8", 150lbs, get along with everyone...and I'm WAY more interested in a lady that has style and can think than a model who's gonna break with a good hug and can't tell a boom from a loud noise!
