2002 29hp Yanmar 3500-4000 hrs estimated

40-45 cat,Yanmars New 2002,estimated 3500-4000 hrs,no hr metres, also have not been serviced for 3 years (due to low engine hours in those 3 years)
Thoughts? Questions to ask?
Would like to get 3-4 years cruising out of them and have something still sellable
Am l dreaming or do l need to factor in rebuild or new engines
Thanks for having a look

Have the eng oil and transmission oil tested and compression checked during a full service.

How do they sound, do they go to max revs, is the gear shift smooth enough, is there good water flow from the exhaust, is there smoke of any colour fromm the exhaust.
They should be fine for what your hoping.. they're only just run in.

The engines are probably fine. Are they fitted with saildrives? If you want to do some homework, that's the place to start. There are several threads already on slipping clutches on Yanmar saildrives. The potential failures do not necessarily manifest as a deal-breaker, but you should understand the issues.

if they start, instantly, when cold; rev to max and pull down to about 90% of hi idle rpm underway, they're probably good. I assume they otherwise appear to be good?
1) Get oil samples, it is easy to do and costs about $20 ea. Maybe get an experienced mechanic to help interpret results.
2) If you do buy it; budget in your price to R&I, and have a qualified diesel injection shop overhaul the pumps and injectors. My injectors cost me $120 to have them cleaned, tested and re-set to correct cracking pressure. I don't have a price for the pump, but I plan to get overhauled this month.

I would get themn serviced and do a compression test on each cylinder, and if there seems to be anything amiss with the pumps, have them checked too. That number of hours is probably more than half of the life of the engines in normal use--but a full recondition may net be needed for some time. Three or four years is a long time if they are to be used a great deal. That would see these engines getting due for a rebuild.

Work on a total of about 5000 hours to a major rebuild. Some do better than that--but that would be my best guess.

No. worries, mate. That's Kiwi mechanics shorthand for " removal and installation".
Good luck with your S & P. search and purchase.

If they are early 3ym 30's yanmar beware as they were supplied with too small heat exchangers & suffered from overheating I was looking at one & discovered this :Warning - Yanmar 3YM30

Re: 2002 29hp Yanmar 3500-4000 hrs estimated

a compression test and sending a good oil sample to this company

https://www.blackstone-labs.com/engine-types/marine/

will tell you wonders. Obviously a good survey is prudent, but if the engines have not been serviced in 3 years, then doing an oil sample analysis "could" be a deciding factor. Read through their website and be sure to follow how they recommend to get the oil sample.

Let us know what you end up deciding.
