Marie Gallante

Although over the years I have been to Les Saintes (Terre-de-Haut) many times I never made it out to Marie Galante.
Wondering if I am missing something that I need to see?
Would appreciate hearing from those that have been there.
Do appreciate your time.

Re: Marie Gallante

We spent 3-4 days at Marie Gallante last year. It is an enjoyable destination. Like most Caribbean islands it has its own personality. The biggest problem with going to MG, which is obviously something you can overcome, is that it is a bit upwind from most cruisers' routes.

Is it somewhere you absolutely must go? Well, no. But if you get a reasonable weather window where you don't have to bash your way there then definitely check it out. Saint Louis, Anse Canon and Anse Cabou are all nice, with the northern ones potentially being rolly depending on swell direction.

From Marie Gallant you have a good sailing angle to St. Francois and if the wind is south of east also to Petite Terre which is an interesting destination (must reserve a mooring in advance).

Re: Marie Gallante

We throughly enjoyed MG. It is the only place in the Caribbean where I saw men cutting cane by hand and loading it on a cart pulled by an ox. A man walked next to the cart with a switch in his hand to keep the ox moving. It felt right out of mid evil European imagery. Food was great and so is their rum. The GOOD NEWS is that it is a bit to weather and not frequently visited.

Re: Marie Gallante

Wow, sounds really great.
The bit to windward may be a blessing.
Many thanks

Re: Marie Gallante

agree that Marie Galante is interesting. We took a tour of the island on a van, saw a fortress (forgetting what it was), a distillery, and a small place where they make Melissa. Overall quite interesting. It was also carnival, so there were bands playing and marching.
