Kent Narrows, MD - How Deep this Year ?
Has anyone been thru Kent Narrows on the Chesapeake Bay this summer and how deep was it?
I checked NOAA chart 12270 that was recently updated and it says 6' on the North end.
My 432 Beneteau draws 6'

Haven't been through this year but the Local Notice to Mariners said that some of the buoys had been moved due to shoaling on the North end so honor the marks not the chart. I think 6' is the max draft at MLW. Go at high tide, and watch out at the South end as there are some humps (last year, I bumped with 4'8" draft cause i was day dreamin after clearing the last mark.).
Goin to St. Michael's?

Re: Kent Narrows, MD - How Deep this Year ?
Due to shoaling the following changes will take place in Kent Island Narrows on or about 30 June, 2011:
A. Kent Island Narrows North Approach Lighted Buoy 3 (LLNR 26417) will be established in approximate position 38-59-02.021N, 076-14-35.164W,
FL G 4s.
B. Kent Island Narrows North Approach Light 3 (LLNR 26420) will be changed to Light 4, Fl R 4s.
C. Kent Island Narrows North Approach Light 4 (LLNR 26425) will be changed to Warning Daybeacon A worded “DANGER SHOAL”.
Chart : 12272 On

two weeks ago at mid tide I was getting a minimum of 7' throughout. Mind the marks and keep checking your drift to stay in mid channel.

Lunar tide has little to do with height of water here in the Chesapeake. Wind speed, direction, and duration has a much bigger effect.
I draw 6' and wouldn't attempt Kent Narrows unless we have had a S or SE wind of some substance for long enough to drive an extra couple of feet into the Bay.

I went thru in late April--no trouble but only draw 4'3".
Heard a few sailboats got stuck over the 4th of July weekend.

Re: Kent Narrows, MD - How Deep this Year ?
Hi,
I went through twice on Memorial - actually came back to get fuel and got stuck on my way back out. I draw 5-6 and will not be taking that short cut again. Its very narrow on the bay side with little room for error on channel position -
I would like to thank the nice couple with the 22ish whaler who bounced me off

Re: Kent Narrows, MD - How Deep this Year ?
I was sailing the Eastern Bay enroute the Wye last weekend and heard someone talking to a boat following him about 5 and a half foot depths over the VHF. Of course, I'm not sure where this was or whether they were actually in the middle of the channel or not.

Yes, we are going to St. Michael's. I think I will take the long way. I have a wing keel and I am not sure how easy it would be to kedge off in that area. It sounds very tight.

It would be hard. Your keel likely looks remarkably like an XYZ anchor ...

yeah, go around. If the southerlies prevail, it's a nice sail up Eastern Bay.
We'll be out for a week starting Friday. Probably hit St. M and Oxford and Solomon's. If you see Zig Zag, give a holler.
