Re: Help with Rum

Really cheap rum is really really bad....

Rum is like scotch.... some like expensive malts.... others just like a decent whisky.
Some like fancy rum taken neat... others look at rum simply as an energy source.

Query, how much does rum cost in in the Caribbean?

Here I would look at between $8 and $10 (US)....

This 5yo Sierra Morena from the Republica Dominica was $8.

The truly frugal rum drinker will note the shape of the bottle.... so much easier to stow..

Re: Help with Rum

Try Cuba's Lengendario brand. They offer different aged rums along with an elixir, which, while very sweet is excellent!

I have to disagree Jim, I have heard many Australians speak volubly about the vileness of Bundaberg rum, but then again most rums are pretty vile to a beer drinker.

I tend to like a sip of Captain Morgan Spiced Gold after dinner myself.

Re: Help with Rum

The rums from Martinique and Guadeloupe, Rhum agricole, prepared from cane juice rather than molasses are meant for a different taste than mine. I find them all very bitter but great in a Ti Punch!

You can still buy industrial from French Islands but you must hurry up. The machinery is being sold and the factories are being sold to less developed countries.

In Martinique it is, I think, Galion (Trinite) that makes the stuff you like.

In ti punch you can add vodka or gin and no one will tell the difference.

Only very basic rums are used in ti punch. Good rhums are drunk as they are.

Re: Help with Rum

Kraken is a dark/vanilla rum, we find it a lot in Mexico, look for the octopus label. Also, Flor de Cana from Nicaragua-yum (get the 5 year ).

Let me disagree with you on that. Ti punch is not to be made with anything other than rhum agricole ! Industrial rum will do in dire situations but definitely not vodka or gin. Many people will tell the difference because your cocktail will be lacking the rum aromas. In fact you should try ti punch not only with white basic rhum africole but also with rhum vieux (aged rum) instead. Sure it can be drunk as it is, but rhum vieux changes your ti punch from good to excellent.

Let me agree with you.

My comment was in response to an earlier comment and meant to be somewhat jocular.

I am a great lover of rhums, especially aged ones. While there, I will as a rule, drink some sort of shrub(b) creole or else rhum 'spicy' prepared with rhum vieux, vanilla, orange rinds, etc..

I will leave ti'punch to the younger generation and to the cruising crowd - people that have no time nor inclination to discern small things.

If we are lucky to live that long, this winter we will be plying lovely waters of Martinique and Guadeloupe once again ... Who knows, maybe I will become a ti'punch expert too ... ;-)

Cheers,
b.

Re: Help with Rum

Some great runs mentioned here! One that I am surprised hasn't come up is Ron de Barrilito 3 star, a blend which is aged in Sherry barrels. One of my favorites, a great PR rum.

This is one of my favorites too! Fantastic rum at a very reasonable price! I always pick up a few bottles on my PR layover to STT!
