Canary Islands in Winter

Good day

We are presently in the Balearic Islands (Mallorca) and are planning on spending winter in the Canary Islands. We should be sailing over to the Peninsula Tuesday (if the weather permits).

Can somebody offer some suggestions?

I'm not sure what kind of suggestions you want but, if it is a marina are looking for, I would recommend Puerto Calero in Lanzarote. The marina is lovely, security is very good and the ambience (restaurants/shops/location) is excellent. Maintainance, and boat repair facilities are good.

The marina is very well situated as it is only 10 minutes to the airport.

We are planing on spending the winter there so I am actually for information as to the best places to go and that don't cost an arm and a leg.

stay away from las palmas un till after the arc rally leaves(23nov?) very few extra marina space and not the safest of anchorages in a s wind

Re Lanzarote. It is worth considering the Marina de Isla Graciosa. This might suit your requirements. La Graciosa is a lovely island immediately north of Lanzarote.

The information on the page here Noonsite: Marina de Isla Graciosa - Permit Now Required is useful. Note that it has useful information provided by Mel of Puerto Calero Marina. "The same reservation system is used for the ports of Morro Jable, Gran Tarajal and Corralejo in Fuerteventura."

In my view the best and most reasonable place to stay , is San sebastion de la Gomera. The marina is well run, clean and reasonable , right smack in the middle of town ( which Las plamas isnt) , close to shops , etc. Yet San sebastion is not a big place, Prices on Gomera are a good bit lower then the main tourist islands, as Gomera isnt a big tourist destination, help by the poor airport, bad roads and mainly black sand beaches.

Calero and Rubicon on Lanza are fine but very expensive, as is Las Palmas, and Snat Cruz marina is a dump. No space in Mogan.

nice new marina in agadir,morrocco close to shops, restaurants ,airport a lot cheaper than the canaries for a long stay as well

No water, no electricity and no showers. Otherwise the island is very pretty. Not a place to be in if the a W / SW storm approaches (they sometimes do in fall / WINTER).

The info given above on LP / ARC is correct - stay away during the ARC unless you have a reservation.

Canary Islands are pretty fantastic and have marinas and things to offer to all tastes - from hippie to posh.

1) Las Palmas main marina (Puerto Deportivo) IS (!!!) 10 minutes walk from city downtown (longer walk from the historical district). The other one (Real Club) is five minutes walk from the center.

2) Prices in Calero and Rubicon are higher but these are private, cleaner marinas (I like Rubicon a lot). Prices in Las Palmas are relatively low - it is a govt. owned marina - not very clean actually.

Warning 1 - local boatyard in Las Palmas DOES NOT WORK, WILL NOT WORK until further notice. If you have repairs to make, make them e.g. at Rubicon.

Warning 2 - you will pay local lights tax. It is a bit of money. Do not panic though - once you pay it, you are clear for 6 months.

Hello everybody and thanks for your answers.

I'm truly sorry for not having answered before. I had to fly home urgently to accompany my mom (she had to start treatments for a colon cancer). I'll be with her all winter so Canary Islands will have to wait till then.
