The 2005
Antigua Classic Yacht
Regatta has drawn to a close after some of the best
racing conditions the Classic Regatta has ever experienced. The winds were on the light side but it gave all of the yachts the opportunity to fly their largest and best
sails resulting in a beautiful spectacle of sail.
The overall winner this year for the MT
Gay Trophy was the well sailed 65 ft Nat BENGIMAN schooner “Juno”, who also won the Nicholson
Caribbean Yacht Sales Trophy for first place in Schooner Class. “Sumurun”, the beautiful Fife
Ketch won the Wayfarer Trophy for first overall in the Classic and Vintage
classes well as the Stormy
Weather Trophy, the Archibald Ried Trophy and the Yachting World Trophy for the Best Elapsed Time. “Sumurun” also was the overall winner of the
Boat International Concourse d'Elegance.
“Ashanti IV” won the Antigua Slipway Trophy, the Beken of Cowes Trophy, for Best Elapsed Time, and the Tropical Studios Trophy for the most photogenic yacht. “Ashanti” returned to the event after many years and was one of the founding
boats in 1988.
“Velsheda” was the star of the Spirit of Tradition Class and also winner of the J Class
race held on Tuesday. She won the Ticonderoga Trophy for first overall and the Sintra Trophy for the Best elapsed Time.
