VAT and Long Stay Visa

Has anyone had a Long Stay Visa, particularly from France, for either 4-6 months, or 4-12 months version? Which one?
Because of the visa, were you considered an EU resident regarding VAT due on your boat? Ie had to pay it after 30 days?

Non-EU citizens buying non-EU registered, VAT unpaid boat, wanting to sail in the Med for a season. Aussie partner will have issues with time in Schengen zone and considering Long Stay Visa (probably 4-6 months version). Kiwi partner should be ok because of the special arrangements NZ has set up with various Schengen countries.

Thanks.

Re: VAT and Long Stay Visa

From what I have heard, if you (yourself) stay more than 183 days in Europe, you are considered an EU resident. If you are an EU resident, you are required to pay VAT for your boat.

I am sure someone else can clarify and answer the rest of your questions.

Re: VAT and Long Stay Visa

Thanks for your replies. I didn't see the other recent discussion on the subject till after I had posted.
We have given up on any long stay visa for this season as the French consul in Sydney doesn't have any appointments available till after we leave anyway. So we have worked out a plan to manage the Schengen days, and that removes any potential VAT ambiguity.

Regards
Debra
