Dismall Swamp Closing

I just heard yesterday from a reliable source that the Dismal Swamp canal route of the ICW will close October 30 at 3:00 pm (1500).

There have been many threats to do this in the past and funding has always been found to dredge and keep it open but this may be the end.

We just went through in August and it was fine. They were, however, building a new visitor center on the opposite side of the canal from the parking lot, so they may be planning to keep the movable bridge to that center closed to boat traffic.

I hope a way can be found to reverse this action. The canal is the oldest man made canal system in North America and it would be a shame to loose this historic route.

The Dismal Swamp Canal is scheduled to close strictly because of lack of water in Lake Drummond which feeds the canal between the locks. It's a shame that Nature has put a jinx on it since it's the first time in many years that they have been granted a decent budget.
