Yet More Sailing Amongst The Breakers

It's shaping up to be quite a year for sailing mistakes:

https://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2...-dont-do-this/

The full video in the link is really something else. Helm skills unbelievable! Never even capsizes!

I have no idea what so many are doing this.

Re: Yet More Sailing Amongst The Breakers

When I was in the merchant marine about 4 decades ago there were two types
of navigation; celesetial and pilotage.

Today, there seems to be a third type, navigation by feel.

Feel the shore, feel the bottom.....

Well the video was taken at 4:20 so there is that.

That is a stiff boat. They should use that island as a breakwater.

Re: Yet More Sailing Amongst The Breakers

I see stories like this with the West Coast bars, like at the Columbia River entrance. But, we have a few that can be sneaky bad here on the East Coast too, like the entrance to the Merrimack River or the Chatham bar in Massachusetts. One where I have observed boats get into trouble is the Westport River entrance in southeastern Mass. There was a distant hurricane generating huge swells that were breaking across the bar. For some reason a couple of boats decided to go out. A Grand Banks trawler was stood up on its transom and luckily flopped to one side and had its bow pushed back towards the entrance and they were able to regain control and surf back in. A Morgan OI 41 was rolled right down and pushed back toward the beach sideways. The problem is coming in from the sea you might not see the breakers until it is too late.

I suspect that a change of undergarments was in order once this situation was resolved.

If one gets caught out by a system in that corner of the Biscay there's nowhere to run except the best option port and pray you get in safely.
From the mid/end of September what looks like a 3 day window to run from say Bordeaux to one the N Spain ports like Gijon can sometimes slam shut 12hrs out..
To late to turn back so best hope is make for the nearest port with the safest entry.

No credit to the captain for the boats survival, that was purely luck that the boat stayed high on the wave and did not broach immediately.
What concerns me is that it appeared that they headed right back out!

Have to agree - they were going flat out astern!

I should imagine getting away from the rollers was also very sketchy.

I know it was luck. I was kind of joking about that

Damn! There's a reason that part of Spain is called the Costa da Morte! This is it!

And it looks like they were about to head back out?! I'd be thanking Neptune, Lir, Davy Jones, or whatever for saving my foolish butt, but I certainly would not be thumbing my nose at him and asking for more.

pirate Re: Yet More Sailing Amongst The Breakers

Likely they had been knocked off the entrance and needed to realign.. happened to me entering Viviero when I misread the entrance heading for a gap in the cliffs which turned out to be lights from a coastal village.. 2am and over a week in high winds and heavy sea's can make one see what one wants to see..
Luckily I realised it in time and reversed course (thankfully the sea was being eased by the headland to the West) and entered the ria 1nm to the East.. no fancy nav gear on a H22, just tiller, 5hp Honda and Mk1 eyeball..
The gods were smiling on me for sure.
