Re: Vessel sinks off NJ

Was that due to weather, anyone know what the conditions were? Always breaks my heart to see a boat lying like that...

Re: Vessel sinks off NJ

We had here in Pa. hellacious weather..heavy rain, high winds, several reported tornadoes that day..so I would assume it was weather related..

Update..yes it was weather related..local tv station interviewed the couple stating the storm hit them with in 10 seconds with approx. 60 mph winds..

Re: Vessel sinks off NJ

I didn't know that Beneteau built spray replicas! (Sorry, I just couldn't resist). But seriously, I wonder how such a hull shape could just lie there at 90 degrees of heel. Internal ballast shifting? External ballast shoe falling off? What? IIRC sprays rely greatly upon their hull shape for stability, but still...

I'm sure glad that t he coasties did their usual pro job of rescue, and that the EPIRB system once again proved its worth, and that the crew are safe ashore. I hope that more info is forthcoming.

Re: Vessel sinks off NJ

wood boats donot sink in same manner as do plastic ones. is why one waits until last possible second to leave boat in a disastrous event such as bertie suffered. had a plank sprung she 'd-a gone down like a clown, but seems to have been rolled....
wondering ..how does one encapsulate a wooden boats keel.....

Obviously some time later, but it looks very calm.

Yeah, the calm seems to have come too late for Bertie.

Are you implying that flooding from a sprung plank is somehow worse than the flooding that this vessel has when lying on her side, essentially awash? Doesn't make sense to me, Zee!

I think the ballast somehow has parted company, or possibly shifted drastically inside, but I await real info with great interest.

Here we go Monday morning quarterbacks!
they did the best they could and survived mother nature's fury. That body of water can be quite nasty...add a tornado formation, no boat is going to survive....these folks had 1000s of miles of sailing experience. Mother Nature won this time.

I'm glad the rescue system worked as designed and they're alive.

Re: Vessel sinks off NJ

This looks like shifted internal ballast, just like Jim said. I had internal ballast on my last boat, much of it was cast in concrete, but there were a few tons loose for trimming. This is not a problem, unless the vessel is overcome somehow. I am not sure about Spray, but many traditional boats do not have positive righting moment to 90 degrees of heel.

Re: Vessel sinks off NJ

Ballast shifted - I'm with you on that. Nothing else would account for the boat failing to come upright again (apart from the keel parting.. but not on this boat).

What a shame. Glad everyone is ok.

Re: Vessel sinks off NJ

We came close to tipping a J32 a few weeks back along the same route. We were running with main and Genoa and we're just about to reef when we got slammed with 30kt gust and swells coming almost across the beam. Was a scary few minutes. Fortunately we got into the wind and were able to get the main down.

So sorry to hear about this. Fortunately they are safe. As they say, you can always get another boat.
