Keel loss report, Tyger of london

https://www.gov.uk/maib-reports/safe...sailing-yachts

Sounded like it was the internal web/cage that failed. Pretty hard to inspect and deal with this issue.

Yeah, lucky. It could have ended very badly.

The failure to weld the interconnecting plates (ie the plates between the stainless bars) to the mounting plate virtually guaranteed eventual failure. Crap fabrication, perfectly hidden.

I wonder how many other keels might be effected? I guess the J bolt concept doesn't seem so bad now.

Re: Keel loss report, Tyger of london

Hanging the keel from a weldment subject to cyclical stresses and possible salt water immersion is kinda daggy, and then not welding it to design is nigh unto criminal negligence. I guess it's hard to get satisfaction from a defunct firm, but if I owned one ot the subject boats I'd be significantly worried and looking for some one to kick.

Sad story, save the rescue of the crew.
