New Perkins Prima ----Volvo MD22. 50hp diesel

This is a new marine Prima (MD22) 50 hp that has been sitting for some time before I acquired it.

It runs perfectly, can send video of cold start.

In order to refresh it properly before starting it, the injectors and fuel injection pump were sent to FI shop.

New rubber on heat exchanger, impeller and timing belt were replaced. All done in 2023.

It comes with a HBW 125 2:1 TRANSMISSION. Also new.

Comes with used engine mounts if you want them.

This is an isolated ground engine which is an asset for metal boats. But it can be used for any boat applications.

The project I got this motor for never materialized, that is why it's for sale.

The engine has approx 2 hours of use, so it's still very green!

Parts are readily available in US and England.

Same engine as the Volvo MD 22.

THIS IS A CHEAPER OPTION THAN REPOWERING YOUR OLD PRIMA OR MD22 POWERED VESSEL.

Location Orlando FL
Price $8500

Re: New Perkins Prima ----Volvo MD22. 50hp diesel

My boat has this engine and it just turned over 4,000 hours. It’s very tempting to buy a full spare engine for a backup!

This model hasn’t been in production for many years so I imagine this one has been in storage a long time? Belts, hoses, and gaskets dry out whether the engine is being used or not and it appears a few of the original hoses have been replaced. Any buyer would be taking a bit of a gamble that the internal seals and gaskets haven’t dried out? Determining valuation is difficult. There may be parts still available for these engines but there aren’t many US-based mechanics who will touch them. Based on stories from others on this and other forums who tired, I don't think there's a viable rebuild path in the US if mine ever gives up.

Not trying to crap on the thread, just sharing some thoughts from someone in the target audience of prospective buyers.

Re: New Perkins Prima ----Volvo MD22. 50hp diesel

Those are all valid concerns as stated above.
That is why the fuel pump and injectors were sent out to be refurbished before the work commenced. This pre-emptive repair was $1300 just by itself.
The timing belt was also replaced as well as some of the critical rubber parts.
There are no oil or coolant leaks
The unit is a solid mechanical diesel engine with no electronics and that is why I chose it.
While it might not be a suitable application for all boaters; as suggested in the original post, it's an option if you are already powered by a Prima or MD22.

Re: New Perkins Prima ----Volvo MD22. 50hp diesel

My experience: I had this engine on my Hylas 44, did 5000 hours before I sold the boat. One of the best engine I ever had and was running as new when I sold the boat.
Important things to know: better to install the optional transmission cooler. Inexpensive, easy to install and make big difference. The seawater pump need a special alignment tool if you replace it or the pump shaft will worn out. The timing belt have to be replaced following the manufacturer recommendation. Easy task for mechanic inclined people. This is a reliable engine with low fuel consumption and I recommended it.

Re: New Perkins Prima ----Volvo MD22. 50hp diesel

Do you know how cross compatible parts are with Volvo MD22A (as opposed to MD22)? The MD22A is 58 HP. It looks verrry similar but the devil is in the details eh?

Re: New Perkins Prima ----Volvo MD22. 50hp diesel

Volvo received all their MD22 from Perkins.
Perkins had the M50, M60 and M80 Prima motors.
I believe Volvo used the same HP offering with the three models.
The differences are the M60 spun at a higher rpm to develop the additional hp, 4000 rpm. The M80 was fitted with a turbo. The M60 &M80 have oil coolers.
Hope that helps.

Re: New Perkins Prima ----Volvo MD22. 50hp diesel

May I ask how much you ultimately let it go for? It would be a useful data point as I have a 4400 hour, 30 year old, MD22A.

Im chewing on the economics of getting a spare engine to provide piecemeal parts to keep the current one alive, or repowering all together. Any advice is appreciated!
