Dick Zaal Greyhound Aluminium Yacht

A friend of mine wants to sell his beautiful Dick Zaal Greyhound Design. The boat was built in 1985 for the OSTAR-Race and sailed around the world between 2001 and 2003, through the southern ocean and round cape hoorn. After the voyage the boat got a big refit (that cost more than 200K!) and is now in perfect shape to take on any ocean, round any cape. The boat is german flagged and in a boatyard close to Greifswald near the baltic sea. I will forward any questions to the owner. Asking price is 150.000 Euros (approx. 180.000 US-Dollars).

Dick Zaal Greyhound Design, Aluminum, 12.18 x 3.40 x 2.25 m, built at Atlantic Yachts Harlingen in 1985, extensive refit (including mast, rigging, sails, engine, electronics, keel, rudder, …) in 2006. Equipped with Autopilot (Raymarine), Aries Windvane, Wind-Generator (Superwind), Solar, Radar, …

Re: Dick Zaal Greyhound Aluminium Yacht

Attractive yacht in many ways, but in the pic that shows the keel, it appears to be raked forward rather than aft. Could be an illusion, but if not, this seems a serious flaw to me. Dunno about the hydrodynamics, but its ability to trap lines, nets or debris would rule it out for me.

Have I misconstrued the pic?

Nope, you are completely right. The keel has been redesigned (by Dick Zaal) a couple of years ago, to reduce draft but keep the sailing performance. It is unusual, but it works pretty good! The boat raced in an OSTAR in 2009 and did pretty good.

Thanks for the info. The requisites for a racing keel and a cruising keel are different for sure, but usually have to do with draft and perhaps ease of stalling. I've never seen a keel raked forward before, and I'm not competent to comment on its efficacy as a foil, but if one sails in areas with kelp or other debris or lobster pots and so on, it would seem to be a real nuisance... nay, a safety hazard.

I'd love to hear the designers comments on why it came out that way.

I love the design. I'd install an aft tapered tie rod on the forward section of the keel to allow it to shed most lines/kelp.
