PV market is shut off to China

If the PV market is shut off to China ,what does that mean for the world as far as solarpanel prices? will the small solar panels that we see on our boats double in price?

Re: The war has begun

TC, can you edit your title please, we don't want people thinking about guns but instead to reply about solar.

Can I ask you why you think that China has been presumably locked out of the US market for the supply of PV?

Not only US I belive it is going to be in Europe also, China is responding to the problem by bringing its own suits to Greece and Italy and S.Korea..The trade war has begun, hasnt it ? The US has issued a final statment claiming China has been dumping PV on ,not just US, but Europe ...I think they have levied tariffs up to 250% on some products..This info came to me thru a report issued by the CCCP,they are chaging leaders also at this time and I think the "Big Show " is about to start...Romney said that from day one he would label China a currency manipulator..It starts with a "trade war" and ends with a ?...

I was wondering if I was the only person that monitered Socialist Radio, given that Mr. Romney was going to butcher Big Bird, It would have been bad to see Diane Rhmes and Garrison Kellor go by the wayside...

Re: PV market is shut off to China

While I have US made solar panels on my roof (from a now bankrupt company), I think it is more important to have lower prices and more innovation/competition as long as they are playing fair.

US resellers and installers will still have jobs and probably even more than today if prices come down too. We need to know what the price is in China to see if they are dumping them in Europe/US though. There are a few other expenses in the US/Europe that they don't have in China too.

Re: PV market is shut off to China

"The ITC yesterday voted 6-0 that U.S. solar-panel manufacturers have been harmed by illegal dumping from their Chinese rivals, opening the way for the Commerce Department to impose tariffs. The department has said these will mainly be 24%-36%, although some companies face duties of up to 250%. The Chinese are already planning their retaliation in what could turn into a bit of a trade war."

If I was going to buy solar panels, I'd be doing it today.

Being a student of Sino-US relations,I think this is just the tip of the "iceberg" as far as trade "wars" go.... I think that we will see in the very near future that the Chinese are facing a problem that no amount of nego. will fix ...You cant have your cake and eat it too(cant be capitalist and communist at the same time, although they have been doing just that for the last 20 plus yrs.) We are about to see the next" greatest generation" get to work and change this world for the better ,might get ugly before it gets better, but it is going to change...Mitt Romney would have started the process from day one if elected...I think President Obama will have to remove the "velvet glove" and show the "iron fist" a little sooner rather than later with China moving ahead with its "reforms" and its "opening up" with regards to the Sinkaku islands and other disputes with its neighbors...they say they are ready to face all problems with force if need be...hope I am wrong ,but I am not!

Solendra was a good example of why China must play by the rules or revert back to hiding behind the "bamboo curtain"...

China and fair trade seem to be mutually exclusive. Would you like extra Melamine with that?

Re: PV market is shut off to China

Maybe today's article in the WSJ is missing something. Yes, it clearly states 24-36% tariffs for Chinese panel makers. It said nothing about 250%.

There is something else that appears to be overlooked. "The current tariffs won't apply to panels whose solar cells were made outside China." Think about that!

I recall reading some months ago how DM solar panels escaped tariffs by manufacturing their cells outside China although the panels were assembled in China. The Great One's action will cause some financial pain although I doubt the tariffs will have any significant immediate financial impact.
