Grounding System Wire

I have noticed that the grounding cable that ground several pieces of equipment in my boat is a bare copper type wire. Is that the appropriate wire?

our boat is a 1979 GulfStar 37 and all thru-hulls etc. are grounded with 10 gauge copper strand wire most is lug attached to the thru-hull the rest if no attachment point (bolt) is splayed open and secured with s.s. hose clamps around the fitting.
surveyor said this wasnormal practice and sufficiant as long as every thing was clean which i had to do before boat was launched for insurance reasons.!
