Fuse size

The attached photos show what I believe is my main battery bank fuse and negative bus. The fuse is about 12 inches from the batteries on the negative side of circuit. What I need to know is the amp rating for the fuse. I can’t see any markings on it. Can anybody tell from looking at it or know where to look for a rating etc. Thanks

Re: Fuse size

Hola,

I am no expert and, I did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night, but I believe that is a shunt and not a fuse. Just an ignorant amateurs observation so take it for what it is worth.

You might be right. Maybe my first question should be “Is this a fuse”.

Re: Fuse size

Definitely a shunt, looks like one for an older Xantrex battery monitor.

Re: Fuse size

RBK, are you suggesting I finally got something right? After 47 years aboard this big round ball and I did it!! Please notify my wife and kids as they will most certainly never believe it. Actually don’t tell them. They will just pass it off as a lucky guess.

Sarcasm aside, Osprey, I would follow Sailorboys advice and locate the red wires starting at the batteries and working out. Hopefully you will come across some sort of fuse or other circuit protection. Let us know what you find, or don’t find, as the case may be.

Safe Journeys,
~Jake

Re: Fuse size

That is a double shunt for a battery monitor. Probably a link 2000. Although only one shunt is being used.

Btw the size of the fuse, if installed as there should be, all depends on the size of the wire it is on.

Re: Fuse size

If you don't find a fuse, you should put one in. It can go in either lead, but make sure you don't inadvertently put any wires on the battery side. Sizing should be fairly large - enough to start your engine in case you have to use the house bank to do this. On my boat, we have 1/0 wire and I used 300 amps for both battery fuses.
Also, don't use the inexpensive ANL fuse holders and fuses that are sold for folks who put in those enormous stereo systems - spring for Blue Seas or other high grade product.
