On our twin engine boat, I like to monitor the RPM's with the tachometers. RPM's would be (revolutions per minute)'s, not (revolutions per minutes ).

The "s" on tachometers covers it. You are still measuring RPM not RPM's..

It is still revolutions per minute not revolutions per minutes..

Also:

"When at idle, the tach shows a range of RPM's between 500 and 1000. Do I have an air leak somewhere?"

Yet another valid use of "RPM's"

And my sister in law adds an extra "a" in realtor (she says real-a-tor) and most Presidents can't even pronounce the word nuclear correctly (they say nuc-u-lur).. Still doesn't make it correct..

Amps per hour, amps/hr, nuc-u-lur, real-a-tor and RPM's are all equally is incorrect...

Re: Amps v Amp hours v Amps/Hr

I think any english teacher would recognize that one needs to maintain the correct plurality in a sentence. RPM's is the plural form of RPM - not the plurality of "minutes".

I am being pedantic in an attempt to take this thread way off topic - as it should go.

Isn't
Quote:
RPM's
possessive rather than plural?

I hesitate to get into a semantics conversation with users of the English language from different cultures, but even the American grammar guides agree:

Quote:
Rule 2b. Do not use an apostrophe + s to make a regular noun plural.

Incorrect: Apostrophe's are confusing.

Correct: Apostrophes are confusing.

Incorrect: We've had many happy Christmas's.

Correct: We've had many happy Christmases.
From
The Blue Book of sppeekin and riteing and such stuff

And this is far and away the best thread drift I have seen.

Really, not RPMs? Why the ' between RPM and s if it's just indicating a plural?

Nevertheless, an excellent thread. And it's not just on forums that you see amp hours used incorrectly, it's sometimes sailing publications too - even more annoying!

Re: Amps v Amp hours v Amps/Hr

How about "It is the RPM's problem"? Or "I have a problem with my RPM's pointing thingy".

Possessive now, not plural.

Actually, shouldn't it be R'sPM? Therefore you are all wrong! Unless you are only talking of a single revolution. :>)

Exact same principal as a dozen:

baker's dozen = the number 13.

baker's dozen rolls = 13 rolls.
