Traveling ICW From Kemah,TX to Lake Pontchartrain, LA.

My Husband and I are looking for experienced crew or skipper to navigate the ICW from Kemah TX. to Lake Pontchartrain, LA. We have a 2007 Hunter 38 sailboat. Would like to get going late April or early May. We have raced in the Harvest Moon a few times and traveled the ICW from Rockport TX. to Kemah, but have never taken the ditch east of Galveston Bay.

Are you sure? Personally I find it easier and safer in the Gulf though it does involve overnight passage and oil rigs.

Having said that I could be available depending on dates.
PM me for more information.

Re: Traveling ICW From Kemah,TX to Lake Pontchartrain, LA.

Cant crew for you, but have done this trip on both inside (ICW) and outside route. A few things to be aware of/suggestions: both inside and outside have risks for a small boat, be cautious and keep good watch. Lots of commercial traffic on both. LOTS of rigs etc outside...sometimes they are lit. Good VHF at helm is very important (especially inside route). Know the VTC and working channels and monitor them. RADAR, AIS both very good to have (RADAR esp if outside). Several very interesting intersections: Morgan City (potentially lots of commercial traffic), transitting the Miss River and associated locks (lots of traffic and strong currents), narrow horizontal clearance at bridge in Houma (great stop, but not a great place to meet a big tow). ...

I think there is a thread here already discussing this route...give that a search.

Small boat facilities are few and far between on the inside route, but just enough to make day runs (do NOT run inside at night, but carry a good spotlight or two just in case...brighter is not better).

If outside, learn what a siesmic research vessel is and how they are lit...that could save your life.

Get a copy of the Waterway Guide for most current info.

Re: Traveling ICW From Kemah,TX to Lake Pontchartrain, LA.

I am planning to leave Kemah the end of the month heading east on past New Orleans, down the FL coast.
Have a Hunter 42 passage in the Kemah Marina. May want to buddy boat as far as you are going.

Let me know if interested
