Greetings! A Few questions!

Hello! I'm a complete n00b so feel free to laugh me out the forum if any of this sounds ridiculous, implausible or just stupid.

I'm finishing university this spring and have accepted a voluntary teaching position at a school in Honduras from August onwards, I'm therefore looking to find a way of crossing the Atlantic from the UK to Central America as cheap as possible and web searches brought me to this site through googling 'boats to america'.

Is it likely that I'll find anyone sailing in that direction, leaving the UK in June and arriving in Central America by early/mid-August?

Also, what is it that is expected of a person who 'crews' on a boat?

I'll provide more details if / when desired, reluctant to type out an essay if what I'm after is completely out of the question!

Thanks

Re: Greetings! A Few questions!

Usually people are headed the other way, since your target date is during hurricane season.

First off, welcome to CF!

In a nutshell, the answer to your question is; you most likely won't find many making that trip at that time of the year.

July - November are hurricane months in the Atlantic and if you leave the UK in June, you will be making an Atlantic crossing somewhere around early to mid July, assuming you are taking the Uk - azores - caribbean route. Because of this, most people chose to leave across the Atlantic in late November, though a few I know have made the crossing in October.

OK, thanks! So it looks like sailing boats are out of the question then!

Do Freight / Cruise ships head in that direction at that time of year too, or is the weather just too bad for anything to cross?
