Crew Available: Advice needed, Southern US to Puerto Rico

Hi all, first time poster here. My brother recommended the forums here after succesfully using it to find a yacht to sail the Carribbean. Now I would like to do similar.

I am Australian, and will be travelling from there to LA in early to mid December. From there I will head to New Orleans, then onto Puerto Rico to meet my girlfriend for new years eve.

I would like to hitch a ride from New Orleans, or Miami (or wherever I need to be) to Puerto Rico. Is this posible at this time of year? I am a novice (read: sailed once close to shore), and obviously on a relitively short timeframe and funds. Other than these constraints, I am completely flexible as to route, stop offs etc.

How do you guys rate my chances of making this trip a possibility? I know I am asking a lot, and offering little, but it is a dream of mine, and I am very willing to learn (and am also a fairly capable person; handy to have around).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Think you've left the timing a bit short.

When you get to Puerto Rico let me know I have a boat there and could take you for a bit of sailing.
