Lewmar D1 Rope Clutch - Double - Model 29101208 - $75.00 (plus post)

From the depths of the spare parts bins of our sailboat - OSIRIS we found this wonderful rope/line clutch. Rope Clutches - come in a wide variety of sizes and styles from the simple "jam cleat" which has a rotating knurled cam that digs into the rope/line. Others clamp down on the rope/line squeezing it. But Lewmar invented the "wave" or "domino" cascading clutch. Five or more parallel plates with a hole in them are tilted by the clutch lever preventing movement by the rope/line with the clutch lever in the closed position. Open the clutch lever and the plate holes line up releasing the rope/line. The big deal is there is no abrasion or ripping or wear on the rope/line cover with this process. And - you can actually meter the speed of the rope/line as it travels through the clutch. That is unique and what with the cost of rope/line these days this clutch is the way to go.

The word clutch is often misused, in the opinion of Lewmar. As used by an engineer, a clutch is a reliable holding device with designed-in slippage controlled with a brake foot pedal or lever. In the Lewmar Ocean Series rope/line clutches you can actually allow the rope/line to slip out through the device in a controlled manner.
