Sonar Logging

Hi.
Quick version I am wanting to build a portable sonar logging system so I can map the sea bed regardless of which boat I am on is this an option with open cpn?

Longer version. I am a volunteer rescue boat skipper, own a 30' sail boat and often get called to help other boats in our creek. So I often have to take boats into not very well charted waters at the wrong tide in the middle of the night so a the more info I have on the depths the better. I would like to build/buy a portable system so I can move it from a 10' tinnie to the rescue boat to a 50' yacht.
I am trying to get my head around a raspberry pi, happy to buy a windows tablet, more than happy to share the data, I'm in Queensland Australia.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated
Andy

I have a Garmin Striker Plus 4CV fishfinder which has that function, picked it up open box for under $200.
