The app alone is like navionics.

You want full blow with all sensors,radar...you need the core as only device.
It connects to nmea, where it gets power from and also to radar via m12 ethernet connector.
Thats the only proprietary device you need.

The radar and nmea data needs to come from somewhere and need to be processed and then send to tablet where they use mostly Bluetooth but wifi is in parallel connected when needed.
That the tablet cannot do, so you need a blackbox for that.
Advantage is you need a very low spec tablet. I have a samsung S7FE with huge 12.4" screen but processor is low midspec and orca runs absolutely fine with it incl. Radar. Without recharge 9h straight and all other tablets connected get synced.
You can also install orca on chromebox or any other device running Android, IOS or apple with m-processor.

I was under the impression that you needed their hardware for offline charts.

Exactly, they force you to buy their hardware.

how else should you get the radar data to the tablet???
How does that work with Open CPN on a tablet???

I think Orca looks great! That said, I can get radar on my Windows tablet with OpenCPN.

As i understood you need ethernet connection for the radar to work. Thats why you also need the core.

With orca you can get the radar over wifi when your raymarine axiom is running, which is basically a forwarding from the raymarine axiom wifi connection to radar and then to the orca app. But for that axiom must run and you need to setup via axiom...not really handy.
Much better completly independent and in parallel to axiom via the core.
I have raymarine SG2 ap and lineardrive and the orca core 9 axis compass with gyro and 10Hz GPS is much better then old raymarine stuff plus broadcast the 10Hz ROT heading needed by Quantum2 doppler to work. So was a nobrainer to get core.

Our B&G radar is connected to our onboard Ethernet network and that has a wifi AP connected to it. Works great on our laptop as well.

We even use OpenCPN on our ios devices through RDP.

Re: Open Cpn on iPad 11pro

I use an IPad as my primary interphase for opencpn. I run Openplotter/Opencpn safely down below on my Raspberry Pi as a combo Nav computer/WiFi access point and the RPI standard packaged RealVNC screensharing to use it on my IPad and any other interphase on deck or down below. One perk is if you need to go below to use the head or something you can share the screen to your iPhone or take the iPad with you. I overlay weather, AIS, and radar over my charts routinely and seamlessly. You can also run SignalK to broadcast nmea info silently in the background on WiFi off the RPI for any other devices to access the data such as Amazon kindle paperwhite for custom instruments in the cockpit. Check this link out and you will be very surprised at the huge doorway of options going this route gives you. A Raspberry Pi 4 is less than $100 and uses less than 1/2 an amp at 12V.

That different to raymarine...radar connects to a switch running the raynet were also the axiom plotter, orca and the cerbo connects. As soon as you try to connect that raynet switch to the router with wifi the radar transmission is gone.
So you connect all raynet stuff to the raynet switch and then the axiom, Orca and cerbo via wifi to the wifi router.

Thats how i know it works via screenshare, means you need a PC (like orca) that connects to the radar via ethernet and its running on the pc and then ypu share that onto your tablet...completely not user-friendly and one of the reason open CPn is not for me till now. And the reason orca needs the blackbox=core2 to do this right.

Yeah, B&G and Furuno radars just seem to work over wifi.

Only 1 Furuno radar (of their many radars) uses wifi... their lowest end "1st Watch DRS4W" radar.

Yeah sorry, my experience is mainly with B&G but I have connected to a furuno through Timezero but I'm not sure which one. I made a bad assumption.

Re: Open Cpn on iPad 11pro

All the radars use Ethernet. A B&G has a box for power and also nmea2000 so that the radar gets heading info for radar overlay.

What OpenCPN does is reverse engineering the radar protocol so that you don’t need any additional hardware to fully operate the radar. No “core”, nothing.
