Need Help Please with OCPN and Linux

I just can't seem to get my head around Linux. Any help here MUCH appreciated!

My main nav laptop runs OpenCPN v4 with Navigatrix, and seems to work fine right now.

My backup machine has Linux Mint 17 installed, and I just don't seem able to get OpenCPN updated from v3 to v4.

I think I have to add a repository, that I thought I'd got right, only now when running the Synaptic Package Manager, I get the following error message:

E: Type ‘ppaencpn/opencpn’ is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialogue to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I don't understand what that means.

When I look at the list of PPA's there are two entries for OpenCPN. I'd be most grateful for any help aimed at one who simply cannot get his head around Linux:-)

Open a terminal:

Type cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list

post the results.

Re: Need Help Please with OCPN and Linux

open a terminal window and type:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
+ enter
and then
Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade
+ enter

start opencpn and check your vesion now. Ok ? if not try:
Code:
sudo apt-get install opencpn
+ enter

it should install the latest version of opencpn if you have the correct sources.

That returns the same error:
E: Type ‘ppapencpn/opencpn’ is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.

I figured it would be the file:

Remove contents of /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
leave an empty file and save.

From memory in a terminal type:

sudo apt-get install add-apt-repository
answer yes to all questions if already installed type:
sudo add-apt-repository ppapencpn/opencpn

answer yes to any questions

then type:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get install opencpn

That should sort you out.

Cheers

In a linux terminal window, type:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
then continue as described and save when exiting.
