Simply do not update to 5.8.2!

It is impossible to tell from the information you provide. When the application crashes, macOS should generate a report. We want to see that report.

Re: Help / FAQ

Why are you regressing in number from 5.9.0-0-526.... to 5.8.2-0-528....
It is just a number but looks funny.

Nobody does "regress" anything.
If you are talking about packages you randomly download from Cloudsmith without knowing what they are, they can come from several different branches (the ones with version 5.9 are from master branch where new development happens and new features are added, the ones with version 5.8 come from the maintenance branch leading to the next 5.8.x maintenance release and contain only relevant bugfixes)

Re: Help / FAQ

Thanks for the reply, could you take a look for the plugin of Mike for the Canadian tides? Thanks.

Do not understand what you mean, so no, I could not.

Re: Help / FAQ

You need to wait until it is updated for 5.8, as with all the other plugins.

Re: Help / FAQ

I do think OCN is awesome, Nohal!

When I try to upload the Logfile - opencpn.log - listed in OCN the CF upload window states - "Invalid File".

Re: Help / FAQ

Either rename it to eg. Log.pdf or upload it to any service like Google Drive or OneDrive and just post a link.
From a crash we are probably more interested in the crash report generated by macOS than to the application log. Of course both are the best.

Windows 11 Com port

I have been using Opencpn for many years and the Windows com ports for NMEA 0183 have always just worked.
I now have a problem in that I have a serial to USB adapted connected and the data can be seen by my Arduino IDE but OpenCPn doesn't see the data. I can select the com port ok. Say Com3
However, if I set up an alias, say Com1 with some freeware to my Com3, then Opencpn works fine using the alias port.
This is workaround but am curious about the cause and a more permanent solution.
It does work properly on a clean windows 11 as well.
Thanks
Richard

Re: Help / FAQ

You don't describe your setup enough for me to truly understand it, but ...

In Windows, only 1 application can read a COM port at a time, so to feed your COM stream to multiple applications, you need some sort of SW splitter to feed the COM signal to multiple (synthetic) COM ports, & then each individual port can feed a single app. You seem to have this already?

Also, having done MANY installations, one of my biggest headaches is poor quality Serial/USB adaptors. The problem is that Serial (RS232) uses a +/-9v signaling scheme, while NMEA0183 uses 0-5v signaling. So your Serial/USB has to be capable of switching on that 0-5v signal, & many of the cheaper ones don't, or don't do it reliably.

FWIW, I've used a KeySpan 4-port Serial/USB adaptor for 16 years, since I first installed an AIS, & it hasn't missed a beat. It's about twice as expensive as the cheap ones, but worth it IMO.

Re: Help / FAQ

Thanks that's helpful. I'll look for something using the serial port. Hhdsoftwaredocs have a free tool that works and provides an alias and that connects ok.

Re: Help / FAQ

Not sure this is the correct area.

But I was wondering if anyone had a comparison of the pros/cons for which hardware you install OpenCPN on.

I'm essentially doing a new build and looking at which avenue to pursue. Any advantage of using VM vs. RaspberryPi vs some other homebuilt system?

I'm assuming plugins aren't cross platform?

Id also (ideally) like the machine to act as a battery/system monitor. A bit like the SIMARINE PICO but with my own visualization using graphene or something.
