Re: trying to figure out what thi is...

Kind of looked at it again and thinking it is too large for my arch idea. When I go back to the boat in a week, I will take it back with me and put it back where I found it.

I dumpster dive at the marina. So does Warren Buffet.

Leave it outside the dumpster, someone else will find use for that steel. Scrap if nothing else.

Re: trying to figure out what thi is...

Nice stainless collection if nothing else. One and a half-inch tubing is not trivial. It looks exactly like my solar panel support on an arch that a friend helped me build but mine's made of 1-inch aluminum so it's a little lighter. I have bars on the side for mounting extra VHF antenna, AIS puck, radar, SSB antenna, and to hang my wetsuit after a dive. Very useful structure IMO. Good find. No judging about your dumpster diving. In fact, I hope your marina neighbors don't actually put stuff like this *in* the dumpster...

The short laterals suggest a ladder arrangement. Perhaps it is an end support for a bunk. Is this stainless, or chrome plated steel? A fantastic find if stainless. An ok find if just chromed steel. The stigma attached to "dumpster diving" just makes more opportunity for practical minded people. Useful material is still useful, whether it is free from a trash bin or bought at retail price.

Did you say that you were gonna toss it back? If you have fabrication skills, an angle grinder, and a welder, you can make something useful with that stainless. Must be a at least couple hundred buck$ worth. All the glitters is not gold, but it could be stainless steel. And stainless actually is more useful than gold. Hmmm... wonder if the proud non dumpster divers would walk past a gold brick in a dumpster?

Re: trying to figure out what this is...

I'm hoping someone else gets to use it in it's entirety. I have been a Machinist, Toolmaker/Engineering for 40+ years. I'm semi-retired with a complete Machine Shop on the ranch. I have lots and lots of drops of SS, Alum, Ti and other goodies.

Re: trying to figure out what this is...

I would guess solar mount to go on stern. Perhaps the black wrap is to prevent stern light reflection-- we added a similar tape to part of our davits for this reason.

Re: trying to figure out what this is...

If I found it, it would be for solar panels.

I pull great stuff out of the dumpster all the time. Latest was 8 yards of heavy duty sunbrella that became a binnacle cover. My buddy’s dodger came out of the bin, frame and all. So did his hatches. My neighbors $400 dock box was a recovered throw away. Racers toss “perfectly good” halyards which I grab for spare line.

Re: trying to figure out what this is...

Admittedly, when I keep my boat in a marina, it is usually a lower cost one. This is often populated by cheaper plastic classics, just this side of being derelicts. And I'm sure most here have seen them with their frayed and knotted docklines and half the time a retired halyard instead of nylon.

When my dockline begin to show signs of wear or after washing a few times look like they are closer to their end than the beginning, I donate them to these people, usually a liveaboard. Or after a spring or fall blow and their lines fail, I have something on hand to tie them back up. Most of them look to be college students and have found cheap housing.
