My
emergency TOP FIVE list: start the
engine...a priori.
Your scenario relies on at least some juice in the
battery. Taking the
charging unit out of the equation complicates every aspect of survival: AIS/VHF,
SSB, strobe...but especially the
electric pumps. You don't mention a serviceable manual
pump, but that large of a hole would be impossible by even a big Whale/Gusher.
I have plumbed
cooling water">engine
cooling water intake through a two-way stopcock to suck high
water from the just under the floorboards (instead of sea
water inlet), should a massive leak not be handled by my two other
electric bilge pumps (and, of course, the big Whale manual pump). The caveat that you can sense coming is to NEVER let that
bilge cooling water run dry or get fouled. I have a good snorkle-screen on the inlet hose, and it would only be activated under the kind of
emergency scenario you are proposing. Hope never to put it to the test.
