SSB receiver advice?

Hello all,
I haven't found a threat for this topic. Small boat, limited resources cruising in Turkey. Would like to purchase a SSB receiver and, hopefully, interface with a pactor modem or weather fax printer.

Is this practical?

Re: SSB receiver advice?

Not going to work with pactor but a cheap receiver with SSB can hook up with free wefax software running on your PC or Mac.
My short list would be Tecsun 660/680/880, Sangean ATS 909X, or Sony SW7600GR. Cheapest would be the 660, best build quality the Sony and best bang for the buck the Tecsun 880.
Software to look at would be Cocoamodem for the Mac, JVComm 32 for PC.

Edited to add.... very practical

Re: SSB receiver advice?

In case you missed El Ping's point, pactor requires a transceiver to operate, for it is a two way exchange of data. But any of the receivers mentioned will allow reception of wefax broadcasts when coupled to a PC with appropriate software. And in the middle of the night at sea you will be able to find broadcasts which will amuse or infuriate you, depending on your response to blatant religious salesmanship. To say nothing of the sleep inducing benefits of cricket broadcasts!!

Re: SSB receiver advice?

Ron,
1) Others have given you good info, especially El Pingunio's succinct and direct answer...
And, just to be clear, except for the inability to use with a PACTOR modem....using an SSB receiver for receiving weather info is a VERY practical approach!!

FYI, for Med cruising, you may find receiving NAVTEX (at 518khz) using your new receiver, to be all that you need on a regular basis....and then occasionally connect the receiver to your laptop to decode some wefax charts, when needed!!

And, FYI there are many threads here-abouts, on this subject...(see below for links)

2) As long as you've already gotten a direct answer to your question, perhaps I should also point you to where you can find a wealth of both "weather" info, and "radio" info???

--- For "offshore weather":
a) Have a look at these videos....
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...zdjTJjHlChruyY

b) Have a look at this thread...
Offshore / Hi-Seas Weather data / forecasts

--- For lots of "radio" info (including "SSB Receivers"):
a) Have a look at these videos..(especially the first, third and fourth, videos in this playlist....as they apply to "ssb receivers" very well!!)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...ZDo_Jk3NB_Bt1y

b) Have a look at this "Sticky"...where you find many links to many different pages/threads about HF / SSB Radios, including "ssb receive only" info...
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...tc-133496.html

3) And, here are some discussions/threads directly on point, of "ssb receivers"...

Ron, I do hope this helps...and FYI, if you give some more details, we can give you more specific info about the Med, etc. weather info....and more info about NAVTEX, etc..

Fair winds...
