It has not been left out, you have been talking about it since post #7.

I have been talking about what he already has because he already has it why buy something else. Therefore no need for CHIRP.

KeelMe was (being his normal jerk self) rudely showing what stnick said was wrong. Again no need for CHIRP.

You are now officially the spokesman for CHIRP. Congrats!

Re: replace or duplicate transducer

If your current transducer works with the nes sounder then keep it. If your current depth sounder works then you should be able to use the new transducer but you will need to ensure the new setup uses a different frequency. Eg the depth sounder likely uses 50-200 kHz so set the new system to use anything but that

Re: replace or duplicate transducer

I have a question.
Sorry to disappoint...but it's not about chirps.
An old data marine depth sounder, the head is dead. would like to get something cheap for temporary to run with the old transducer.Used preferred.
Think it's a 200hz.
Any thoughts from the xperts?
An answer that is cheap and easy to facilitate is preferred.

Re: replace or duplicate transducer

As far as I remember Data Marine used 200kHz.

If you want used a Raymarine ST40 depth display can be had for around $50.

If you want new and fairly affordable a Raymarine i40 can be had for about $170.

You will also need to find some 1/8" female spade connectors to connect your transducer to a Raymarine display.

I personally would spend the $170 on the new i40. It should last you the next 10+ years.

Steve, we've got an ancient RayMarine 200KHz depth sounder system (number only) as well as a Simrad fish-finder (200/50KHz). It's wonderful. I thought they might interfere with each other, since they're both 200KHz, but they don't. Not only do we get redundancy if one gets knocked out (happened once) but when going up rivers or other shallow areas & it starts getting shallow, we can look at the depth on both sides of the boat & turn to the side with the deeper reading. Magic! OK, we're a cat & our transducers are ~20'/5m apart. I think you'd want some separation on a monohull, but I don't know how much.

Re: replace or duplicate transducer

Hey Steve, we have the same as earlier post Pete7, that is original equipment Ray ST60 near the mast and a new self contained GARMIN at the stern as far aft as possible. We have had no problem with interference. The main reason for the stern GARMIN transducer is for reversing, town quay or berths etc, because the bottom can come up quickly and by the time your transducer in the centre of the boat picks that up the rudder has already grounded.

We specifically use this in the Med for backing into town quays where we have learnt from experience the need for a rear transducer.

It is also handy to have a backup for general sailing
