I Have an Onboard PC with an XP Video Driver Issue

first off, I dual boot between Ubuntu and XP
the motherboard is an Intel server motherboard 2.8ghz
It has an AGP Nvidia 6200 video card.

On XP I can not get the Nvidia driver to install. Ubuntu Nvidia driver is fine.

The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit.

There are only two options to check on Nvidias site when you are downloading video drivers, 32, and 64 bit systems. Alot of people don't know that there are 2 different versions of the driver update, I just wanted to know what he had so that I could give him an answer. You can check what OS you have by going to Start>Control Panel>System, and from there you can see what version you have. Make sure when you get the drivers to mark down exactly what you have so it knows what driver to find for you.

ok, it is 32 bit and I downloaded the 32 bit driver for XP. I tried several drivers about 5 and none would install.

So lets first determine what kind of computer you have and who manufactured it.
Or is it homebuild??

Reason is that some manufactures of computer hardware modify there own drivers to suit there hardware. So if you later upgrade the software doesn't recognize the hardware.

(Had this once with a wifi antenna could not upgrade the driver could only use one version of the drivers)

Only one computer, dual boot and yes, it is homebuilt with used parts.
I had an ATI AMD vid card in there and it worked and installed drivers with no troubles.
So I decide to upgrade the vid card to Nvidia and driver wont install.

That web site at least offered a solution so even though says for laptops, I will try it.

It is an INTEL 478 motherboard 2.8 ghz with sata and a single CPU and 1 gb memory.
So maybe intel has some drivers which I doubt. I would think intel might list a vid driver for the onboard video, but I am running an add on AGP card.

yes, that does not install.

I went out there and tried the 'solution', copying over an inf file and it did not work. That inf file does not exist in the original archive from nvidia.

First of all you installed a video card in a system with a video card.
Did you switch of this onboard card in the BIOS.
If not than probably Windows XP is seeing a videocard (The onboard one) but not the correct driver hence:

Further if my memory serves me correct you need a chipset driver for the AGP port. First install the AGP port and then the computer will see the correct video card.

I do not know why linux does it correctly (Not linux proficient) but this is what I would look into first.

in system device manager I get error exclamation mark

when reading about it, windows says device cant start

no I mean the nvidia driver install program gives an error message and quits.

Two thoughts.

First, the 6200 series runs at 8X AGP. If you do not have that specifically stated in your Bios (Its running at 4X for example) you might run into problems. I would suggest updating your Bios for sure, not only for the Motherboard but also the NVidia card's firmware if you can borrow someone else's rig. Make sure to check that Bios is using AGP instead of PCI or the onboard GPU.

Secondly, if you have installed nVidia drivers that do not work and simply install new drivers over the old ones, it will also lead to problems. You need to use a utility to clean out all traces of nVidia's DLLs as well as ATIs. Be careful as you can wipe out the onboard drivers as well (Which are ATI I think for that board). You can do this using a tool such as DriverSweeper, but be prepared and make a CD with drivers on it just in case.

Lastly, if the card is not even being recognized by the installer you have can assume that something in BIOS is preventing that. Disable all resources via bios that are not used freeing up a ton of the IRQs. Such as Serial connections, onboard sound, legacy USB etc etc. Get video working then turn each resource back on one by one till it sings.
