Garmin, old to new

We are replacing all our electronics due to two lightning strikes. The person at West Marine said he wasn't sure if I could transfer all the data from the old chartplotter/GPS unit, 172, to the new chartplotter. This would be maps, waypoints, etc. etc.
Has anyone done this or had a problem like this?

You can still get a 172 online, just have to do a little digging. I would give Garmin a call too, see if they have any ideas.

If the new chart plotter will take an SD card it can be done. As I recall I initialized the SD card by placing it into 400 series device on the boat. When that card is placed into the PC Mapsource saw it as a GPS device and I was able to send the waypoints and routes the SD card.

Garmin Customer Service is super, they can walk you through it. As I did this a few months ago and may have missed a step.

I believe Bill is correct. Use the data card to upload/download. Gall or email garmin with any questions, they are very good at helping your out

The track logs can be transferred yes.
