Connect chart plotter to 12 v battery?

Hello,
Noob here. The bus bar in my panel is so hard to get at that I'm considering connecting my new Garmin 743 directly to a separate (not the house batt)12 V battery). Is this safe for the unit? My plotter has an inline fuse of course.
Any ideas? Many thanks.

You will need a properly sized fuse at the battery end of the wire to the chart plotter. This is to protect the length of wire from the battery to the chart plotter in the event that that wire shorts to ground.
The fuse on the chart plotter end will not do that.
