Best Satellite Service for Speedy Internet

Sailing east coast to CA and need to select a service that supports VPN too. Please comment about providers / resellers or recommendations.

This is for work. So performance is more important than cost. Not that cost is no object, but is not terribly relevant.

How do you define "speedy"? What kind of performance are you looking for?

With satellite you're going to have high latency. 600ms one way is considered good.

Bandwidth is another matter. With high latency you're going to reach the theoretical limits of throughput quickly as well. You won't get much more than 5mbps without special equipment.

If special equipment is military grade, then correct no need. However, rugged or commercial grade (specialized consumer gear) is something to consider. So, within those parameters who’s “birds” are most desirable?

Here's a pretty good summary of the current status of internet on your boat. It ain't easy, ain't fast, and definitely ain't cheap! Unless you plan to be more than a few miles offshore, your best bet is cellular with unlimited data plans. Even then, if you're a heavy user, you'll end up either paying a hefty price for data or experiencing "throttling" slowdowns in under-served markets.

Do you access via satellite? What network?

it works through all phone and or sat networks, you have to have a connection. This is to speed up things, VPN.

Works especially in area's where the internet not exactly is "freedom of knowledge".

I don't see it doing anything for you in areas with slow, expensive internet connectivity - it's just routing all your traffic through a specific point (your home). In many situations that will be slower than going direct to your destination. It has no real relevance to the subject of this thread.

This is a great summary of "True" marine use satellite services.

Since I telecommute to work and use a lot of data, I couldn't afford "ANY" of these choices however, so since I am in the gulf coast region "I.E. North America" I resort to satellite in a can ( 5 gallon bucket and 150 feet of cable, a level and a compass) with Hughes Net ( Hughes Net is a choice you only use if you are desperate, as they play all kinds of games w your download speeds) " I have found internet satellite is not very good for Skype or any voice chat applications.

If you need VPN you probably won't be able to use satellite due to lag time usually 700 to 900 ms.

At least I can't get it to work with Cisco VPN, so I ran a Ubuntu up my mast and can get WiFi about 5 to 8 miles out and I have a ATT MiFi Hot Spot with an antenna extension when that doesn't work.

New cellular data plans in the US has shifted from "Full Time limited" data to "The new Unlimited data plans", which are "shared data, which pauses every 5 minutes for a few seconds", which can drive VPN crazy and telephone support for VPN over Cellular networks is, uh,,,,, a crap shoot, be sure you tell the person you buy the HotSpot from that you plan to use it for VPN and test it ASAP.

Good luck and post back if you find a better/cheaper way to access the net from your boat.

I think spell check got you --- Ubuntu = Ubiquity
I use Cisco AnyConnect with my Ubiquity on Xfinity hot spots. Xfinity and the Cisco work well together in the US. speed like home connection.

my question to you: why do you use VPN when on cell data? isn't cell data inherently protected when compared to wifi, especially open networks?
