don juan de mateus writings: 5 points of solitary bird
was the stimulus for this boats name 3 owners ago--is still appropriate, so i keep it.
boat loves it, so why not...

The 1st, it flies to the highest point,
The 2nd, it does not suffer for company, even of its own kind,
The 3rd, it aims its beak to the sky,
The 4th, it has no definite color, and
The 5th- it sings very sweetly."

Re: What's your boats name?

Happy Hooker is the name of my bass boat. I have yet to buy a sailboat, so I will see what fits once purchased.

Pretty sure we are the only boat that regularly hear others on the VHF saying "may the force be with you" as we sail by

I am a surgeon and considered several medical variations such as Knot On Call, but had concerns about name appeal (or more important lack of appeal) when the time comes to find her a new owner.
Great names! I'm a Crimson Tide fan. I never thought about it, but I think a good nautical name could be derived from that.

Re: What's your boats name?

Boats are often considered and referred to as female, so I've usually named mine accordingly. I named my first boat Phoebe after the woman in the Bible who delivered some of St. Paul's epistles around the Mediterranean. Second boat was Lady Di, named for my wife Diana. I named my third boat Mistress to go along with Lady Di (don't read too much into that--I had both boats at the same time.) Third boat would have been named Artemis after the Greek goddess of the hunt that corresponds to the Roman goddess Diana, but there was already an Artemis at the club, so it became Shang Di, named for a place where I lived in China for a while. The automated subway and bus announcements always concluded with "Shang Di" when they came to my stop. I didn't understand the rest of the announcement, but hearing "Shang Di" meant that I was at my "home away from home," which I intended this boat to be. Next boat was named Mary Jewell, after my mother Mary and my wife's mother Jewell. Current boat is Escapade, which represents a departure from the feminine names, but is more indicative of our plans for the boat.

Hahaha!

Lizzy Belle was named Blue Bell when I bought her and according to the paperwork, this name was picked by the first owner some 40 yrs ago.

Blue probably came from the hull color, which was originally "aqua blue on LSD" which may have been cool in the '70's Later she was pained in a dark blue, but they did a crappy job. She's currently all shades of blue, which made me consider "Kind of Blue" as a same for a while.

But I've decided to redo the hull and she'll be off-white with only blue striping.

So - why Lizzy Belle?
Adding the 'e' to Bell was kind of obvious, as her crew is female.
Lizzy was less obvious and the result of too much alcohol and bad jokes ...

Since it still says "Blue Bell" on the stern, and some of the guys were making jokes about me having trouble getting on the boat when under the influence, they were calling her/us "Dizzy Bell".

Anyway, somehow I turned Dizzy Bell into Lizzy Belle and that name stuck - I remembered it the next day and kinda liked the sound of it. So Blue Bell became Lizzy Belle

Edit:
Since boat people tend to call the crew by the boats name, being called "Lizzy" Or "Belle" etc. works for me The fact that you tend to get called by your boats name did play a part when trying to think of a new name for her. Just like spelling the name on the VHF has to be doable.

B'Shert is a Yiddish word meaning meant to be. It's usually used in the context of meeting your true love, the other half of your soul and it is just meant to be, it's "B'Shert."

Re: What's your boats name?

My middle son, before racing 420s was sailing a pixel. Only used in the JSA of long island sound. He named it " ur'Mom". At regattas the kids were laughing hysterically
They would say Ur Mom killed me today or ur mom took our wind etc.

My boat is named Cochise. I like the American Indian reference they were a free people with subtle superstitions. Kinda like sailors!

Re: What's your boats name?

I kept the name it had and the home port. I'm not sure what Ma kai means, but makai means to go toward the sea or just toward the sea. The Coast Guard registration says Ma kai, but the ship's bell has makai engraved on it, and makai is etched in one of the portlights. I call the boat makai. I kept the home port of oceanside California because that is where I was born.
