I was about to buy a 35# CQR used for $225 and then Malbert here on CF mentioned the 25 lb Mantus M1 for $300 delivered so it was pretty much the only logical choice.

I like keeping my old boat close to Old School, but there is a limit.

I mean I have solar and a Victron Bluetooth Smart Controller plus computers onboard receiving AIS from my VHF so "old school" is mainly with the boat type.

I also just bought all new sails so it's not like I'm sailing some old boat with ragged sails and a worn out anchor

Outboard is a 2022 also.

two year old Golf Cart 6 volt Batteries.......

The term "lunch hook" was never meant to literally mean an anchor used by sailors to stop and have lunch, as has been implied by a few in this thread.
Maybe so, but that is how we used our Lunch Hook, to stop for lunch, literally.
Being based in the Virgin Islands we have lots of nearby anchorages and did numerous day sails, including stops for lunch, snorkeling and a drink.
(Back then it was standard practice to dive down and check if the anchor was properly set in the sea bottom, many times down to 40' in crystal clear waters. Stopped doing that
when the anchors got better and we used the auxiliary engine in reverse to set the anchor on the next boat. The first boat we lived on had an engine that worked only now and then, we learned to sail to the dock and to and from anchorages, good old days really.)

Re: Rocna 10 vs CQR 45

I must be nuts. I carry everything. I use a Bruce or a Danforth most of the time, but I also carry a CQR, and an extra fortress. I dont have a bow roller, so everything is kept in a lazarette, rigged and ready to go. Had a delta on a previous boat, but that went with that boat when it was sold. I've been most pleased with the Bruce. It seems to reset well, and it seems to dig into everything but rock. Someone else mentioned sharpening theirs, I did something similar. It helped with clay bottoms.

Well there was that one time we were anchored off Pungoteague Creek just out in the Bay a bit fishing. I was maybe 6 years old. That would have been Lat. 35.4, Long. 75.53

Then later I was 6 or 7 we were anchored on seaside near Cedar Island a barrier Island on the Eastern Shore at Metompkin Inlet. This was Lat. 37.4, Long 75.34

Later we used the anchor in photo at the same location at Metompkin Inlet. Once it saved us from being swept out the inlet during a storm. I had to let out lots of extra rode to finally get it to set though. It bounced along the bottom for about 30 yards before finally setting. We has a split fuel line (dry rotted)

Then Wachapreague Inlet a couple years later near Parramore Island another barrier Island. We anchored some and drifted some for Flounder. This when you could easily catch doormat size flounder. Lat 37.34, Long 75.36

I don't remember how many we caught but it was a beautiful day and we has Vienna Sausage, crackers, and coke for lunch

Later at Cape Lookout, NC Lat 34.37, Long. 76.38

From there I was anchored on the Tennessee River Near Pickwick Lake, Mississippi River near Memphis, Sardis Lake Mississippi, Pickwick Lake, TN and so on also in Arkansas

Wow this could take a while.

How about this I have anchored boats from as far North as Delaware to Southern Florida along the East Coast

This includes the Chesapeake Bay Maryland and Virginia.

Along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Louisiana

As far west inland as Yuma, Arizona

And the best anchor I had the whole time was the CQR

Now I have the Mantus so we'll see how that goes in the next few years

Re: Rocna 10 vs CQR 45

Looks like my 25 lb. Mantus M1 anchor so far is as good as my 20 lb. CQR was.

Wind got up to a bit over 20 knots in my so called protected anchorage on Friday Night and the Mantus did just fine.

Wind was still up when I was leaving that spot so I had to use my 5 hp. outboard at idle to help me get the anchor in.

Re: Rocna 10 vs CQR 45

When we acquired our boat it was equipped with a 35 lb CQR. We drug that thing on all kinds of bottoms from Brownsville Texas to the Chesapeake. It was sized according to the mfgr’s chart for our boat. We changed at that point and have slept better since.

Strange why an anchor that works fine for some doesn't work for others.

Maybe it's as simple as technique.

We found out early on you just can't drop the CQR and back on it like it mad man. It does take some skill

I wouldn't know since I have never backed down on my CQR.

I always drift set my anchor.
