No matter really, they'll both fit in a pond but some are too big to fit in a pan.

Interesting.... In Oz, the rule is the PAN PAN is to be addressed to a particular station i.e. not broadcast as an All Stations or similar. MAYDAY and SECURTIE can be broadcast to All Stations.

couple of years ago, in the Med, I heard the spanish coast guard broadcasting a Pan-Pan to al ships to be on the lookout for a boatful of african refugees that apparently was out there in the night.

so Pan-Pan can be for all ships

USCG... I don't know if it is just me and my wife having hearing problems but we both find broadcasts from the USCG almost unintelligible.

We've listened to them sending PON PON etc. everywhere from San Juan, Puerto Rico all the way up to Maine and nearly all stations are very difficult for us two England-born, native English speakers, to understand. How people whose first language isn't English get on with them I have no idea.

The problem is the speed of delivery - way too fast - and the fact that they sound utterly bored, almost as if a PAN PAN, SECURITE or even a MAYDAY isn't important!

Anyone else find them difficult to understand?

However FWIW, in Oz, a ship station is taught to direct a PAN PAN to a specific shore station (or specific ship station) on the understanding that if it is not an emergency, one has time to work out who is the best respondent for one's PAN PAN.

Sorry Wotname but that’s not correct, a PAN PAN can be transmitted as an “all stations” as well as to a “specific station”, as per the international reg’s to which Australia is a signatory to...

Yes -- I think they often rush it, don't enunciate clearly, and have no idea how bad it sounds on the other end of the transmission on a little static-filled radio speaker. Some of the operators are good, but many are just atrocious.

I find it absurd how fast they reel off a lat/long, whether it's a person in the water or a hazard to navigation or whatever. There's little chance of writing it down or absorbing it mentally.

I've often thought about writing a letter to some CG higher-up to point this out and suggest instruction in clear, deliberate speech. It's not just a formality -- lives depend on it.

Um, the CG puts out periodic bulletins of vessels or individuals in potential distress on the water. They use the "pan, pan" qualifier. Amazing what you can learn by turning on the VHF once in awhile!

I think micah understands that, but questions if it is the intended use of pan-pan.

I think it is... sometimes, and I think it isn't many times.

Same with the "unintelligable" comments; it is the radio operators that are severely lacking skills and giving a bad name to the USCG while the men in the boats are good.
