Re: Retire now & go cruising or THIS is what happens!

If you know how to be thrifty on land, you can be thrifty on the water. If you find it impossible to be thrifty on land, you will probably find it impossible to be thrifty on the water.

We just got back from a cruise. And, are constantly asked by our debt ridden friends, driving $40,000 vehicles, who spend money like drunken sailors, how we can possibly do it. What can you tell them? Change your entire financial life patterns and you can do it too? It's an awkward conversation to have with someone to explain why they are working themselves to death in their sixties while we are retired in our 50's and cruising when we feel like it.

Cruising Croatia with two Spectra watermakers able to produce 34 gallons per hour using d/c and a washing machine.... priceless.

Hey Ken, im with you regarding the watermaker BUT I can assure you Id also be happy without it. Some of the happiest times I've had were cruising on my old wharram showering on deck, simple,....do I want to go back to that? No, but if I did I would adapt and enjoy. Its not the stuff!

Actually, it's about $12k according to some price lists, but I get your drift .

Ken, if you could move your camera a little further to the right and take another pic, we'd love to see the full shot of your yacht

Based on the time value of money I feel a lot better. My $20k boat is more like a $100k boat and I'm only spending $2k year on expenses. That's right at the 10% figure given or only 2.5% based on a 100k boat. All I can say is it's way less than property taxes on my houses.
