Some great recommendations already. Let me add a personal favorite--The Little Book that Beats the Market. Joel Greenblatt keeps puttting up world beating numbers, so he practices what he preaches. His book contains an awful lot of wisom in a very short, easy to read format. And your goal of not making huge mistakes is probably untenable. So only invest what you can afford to lose. If you decide to invest professionally, look into the CFA curriculum, CFA Institute Home.
