Name of a book about french cook

Years ago I read a book about a frenchman who was a cook in nyc and lived on his boat eventually sailing to france despite never sailing before. Told his friend “I’ll learn when I get out there”

Its been a few years trying to remember the title of the book. Could anyone help?
