Re: What if Everyone Wore a Mask?

The first online instructions I saw showed one starting with a 12 x 9 rectangle. I believed their measures, and the finished product was so much longer than Jim's face, that I seized the ear loops in back, and it will keep his face covered, for sure, but then I looked more closely at a little gauze pharmacy mask I had on hand, from the flu some yrs. back.

It's finished size is 2-7/8" x 7-5/8", is made with 2 pleats, and it opens up to 5-1/2".

At this size, if you use dish towels, you can get quite a few out of one towel. Remember, these are to keep you from spewing on someone else, they are not virus filters.

Yes, she has actually gone on walks this way, though not to the grocery store.

Re: What if Everyone Wore a Mask?

I know everyone at our local store would love it, I long for the green rubber hazmat suit I wore decades ago, and hated. I went into the liquor store in the marina with a bandanna and the owner who has greeted me by name for decades didn't recognize me.
Said I looked like a hold-up man, every liquor store owners nightmare said I, masked customers.

This is Mk 3 of our mask. (Note the hardcore sailor's mandatory rolling hitch.)

is it possible for you to post or link the fabric pattern? I like the pleated designs - they seem to fit different faces better.

as an alternative to the rolling hitch, you could use a whoopie sling style adjustable loop, not much advantage, just a bit smoother.

I'm using 1/4" elastic, but for best fit/comfort I still need to custom length it to each user, and wish there was a neat way to make it more adjustable to different head sizes.

masks definitely obstruct your breathing among other things. if you like wearing them then please do. it certainly can't hurt anything

Other people are wearing masks to protect you, so you should probably be thanking them.

Re: What if Everyone Wore a Mask?

I've got my mask; since it is kind of blizzarding out is looks like a prime time to go to the grocery store to stock up for the week when the store will be less busy due to the inclimate weather.

Got to get milk and eggs. Chocolate eggs that is.

Re: What if Everyone Wore a Mask?

So the Center for Disease Control has issued an order prohibiting cruise ships from operating in USA waters for the next 100 days.

Glad my friends go back from their cruise trip. They had a wonderful time.

I shall look into the"whoopie sling style adjustable loop", thanks! I've also got a collection of spring loaded cord adjustment devices scavenged from worn out clothing. They work better for many people.

I used the basic design from Joanns - the bottom video here - missing out the elastic. (Note the Joann's mask is upside down. The pleats should not be in the "catch-rain" orientation).
I started with 2 fabric squares 6" x 15" (15cm x 40cm) sewed around the edges with a 4" (10 cm) gap at the bottom.

I'll try and attach some images.

Re: What if Everyone Wore a Mask?

^^ Thanks helpful.

MY mother in law likes the springloaded adjusters. I ran out, and switched to using small rubber o-rings - which work quite well as adjusters. Inexpensive and when sized right easy to adjust. They used to be recommended in the early days of soft shackles to prevent them from flogging open, until we all realized they just simply don't flog open.

Hmm...good idea. So probably the kind of thick rubber band* that growers use to bind broccoli would do, doubled a few times? I'll give it a go.

* I knew there was a reason I have a kitchen draw full of them!
