What happens when you hit one of these?

What happens when you hit one of these floating garbage collectors?

https://www.theoceancleanup.com/technology/

Is it legal to just set a 600 meter/ 2000 ft unmanned object adrift ?

I cannot comment on the "Legality" of setting the equipment free in the ocean but I suspect that most, if not all, of the countries bounding the north Pacific would agree that anything that can help remove the debris is worth the effort tho' preventing the stuff getting into the ocean would be even better. In terms of the Hazard to Navigation, as discussed the web-site you posted:

Quote:
No heavily-trafficked shipping routes traverse the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, so the chances of a vessel coming across an ocean cleanup system are minimal. On average only 5 vessels can be found in an area twice the size of Texas.

But, in the event that a vessel does pass through the patch, we have implemented extensive measures to ensure the safety of both vessels and our cleanup systems.

Each system will be equipped with lanterns, radar reflectors, navigational signals, GPS and anti-collision beacons.

The AIS will continuously broadcast the location of the systems to passing vessels and the GPS will track the location of our systems, should they veer out of the patch. The US Coast Guard will chart the area as a special operations zone and will issue a Notice to Mariners concerning the presence of our systems.
FWIW...

I think you can set anything you like adrift in the middle of the ocean provided it does not violate the Law of the Sea treaty or some other international treaty.

Personally I think the project is brilliant. I hope it works.

Re: What happens when you hit one of these?

One could remove many times the trash this thing can it’s lifetime by preventing the trash from entering the ocean at the few known sources in Asia contributing by far the lions share. Perhaps it should be anchored off the river mouth of the worst one. It would be quickly overwhelmed. The futility of trying to clean a mile thick water column the size of Texas with an extremely diffuse trash load is totally predictable from an engineering point of view (as opposed to the emotional, “don't bother me with facts” view). The low hanging fruit on this is being ignored, as usual. When you are bleeding the fix is not to mop the floor.

It would be like hitting a buoy, or running into the side of a Coast Guard cutter... you smack your forehead and wonder just what you were thinking.

I guess I didnt read enough. I searched but couldnt find any info on how you could identify it especially at night. I agree if it helps clean up the debris it great. It just seems like an awful big object to float around -- If it is lighted and has electronic beacons / warning systems then it seems relatively safe.

So very true. But it is like talking to a brick. These countries still dump all domestic garbage into the ocean. How can you even reason with a mentality liker that..?

Yes the Yangtze River
"five countries are the leading contributors to this crisis. And all are in Asia. In a recent report, Ocean Conservancy claims that China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam are spewing out as much as 60 percent of the plastic waste that enters the world's seas. Jan 13, 2016"

Re: What happens when you hit one of these?

Its not one or the other, best is to DO BOTH.

I applaud their efforts to cleanup the oceans, and what they are doing in no way effects other efforts to stop people polluting in the first place.

As for legality, I'm sure its more 'legal' that all the containers and other things floating around the ocean.

They appear to be making a good effort to have it stand out. I would assume (could be VERY wrong !) that it would be "Vessels not under command or restricted in their ability to manoeuvre" and lit as such.

I'm sure anyone keeping a proper lookout, can avoid hitting such a thing...

Mark.

And I wonder just how much of that waste is the direct result of all the plastic crap they manufacture for us, sold here in Big Box stores.

Well, they put lights, radar reflectors, and AIS beacons on them, and issue notices to mariners.

Any do-gooder nation, government agency, non-government organization or feel-good PC groups should have to post multi-million dollar liability bonds for any damage, injury or loss of life attributable to such nonsense.

Attack the source of the problem which are a handful Asian countries who don't give a damn

I'd say to anyone who is so out of it that they manage to hit one of these big things, it should be illegal for that skipper to be out on the ocean in his own boat.

It’s a two part problem; curtailing the influx of plastic into the ocean, and cleaning up what’s already there, which is probably measured in millions of tons.

So for the second task, what do you suggest as an alternative to this “nonsense” project?
