Or you could do like me and say pan-pan in the heat of the moment, when you meant to say securite. Oof. Got the attention of the coast guard.

I lost steering in front of a ferry that expected me to give way. I couldn't. I was under full sail and lost steering. So I called the ferry with pan pan instead of securite in the heat of the moment.

Very embarrassing. People in the port I stopped at to fix the steering were like, "were you that guy we heard almost get hit by the ferry?". Ugh
