In Marina for Hurricane Matthew

We are north of Beaufort SC in a marina with floating docks and tall pilings. We had requested a Haulout, but with winds on Thurs, they may not be able to haul us (Bristol 47 Sloop). Have decided not to anchor and stay on or leave the boat anchored.

So only option appears to be in water in marina. No marina nearby for a haulout so no where to run.

Would you stay on inside face dock away from other boats or put boat in a slip? We will get canvas off and everything off the deck, but other than more fenders and double/triple lines to cleats on dock, I am not sure what else to do. Any other thoughts? thanks.

Double slip if you can, and spider web lines around, use as many , I remember in Floyd at FL , we set as much as 30, give some slack and hope for the best, I'm not a fan of side dock unless the wind push the boat out of the dock.....

How tall are the pilings the floating dock is anchored to? You can tied down all you want but if the surge is .......

We took a direct hit in Pensacola from Cat 3/4 Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The surge was between 12' - 18' depending

The floating docks on the navy base floated above their pilings then the dock plus the boats together took out all the boats that were safely anchored in Bayou Grande........

I believe one 22' boat survived at anchor among those 70 plus boats.....

Double slip if they allow it.

Spider web the hell out of her.

Here what we did for Hurricane Irene 8-28-2011. All was well after that one. We seen 78 knot winds come through.

Marina is on a river 15 miles or so from coastline. Pilings probably tall enough for location. Very good idea on a double slip as several boats will be hauled so there should be space. So will spider web on a lot of lines with chafe guard.(Our boat would be hauled Thurs but winds look to be 25 or above so they can't haul.) Thanks

Sounds like you've got the right plan. We've done that drill twice, now, and it worked fine both times.

FWIW, we added rubber snubbers to the primary lines... and adjusted things so the lines with snubbers would take any shock first.

Last time, we were in a double slip shared with folks who also temporarily moved from our own marina, so we spider-webbed with the neighbors "next door"... and that seemed to work fine, too.

Head as far north as you can... looks like this thing will be taking a hard right and spare the Northeast...

Find a small deep water cove with tall trees on 3 sides of it and set 3 anchors in the position of a wall clock,10,12 and 2 Oclock with long anchor lines.You wont want to be in a marina with other boats in winds above 70+.I would be more worried about other boats breaking loose and hitting yours,plus the threat of a tornado coming thru.Make sure you have plenty of batteries for your bilge pumps and if you have solar panels leave them out as you will still get a charge in cloudy weather.

Do what you can for the boat, get in a car, and get the hell out of there.

If you are going to be close to a wall or other boats, consider using tires (wrap them to protect the hull from scuff marks) as additional fendering. Its what we do in the Caribbean and they are also used in the Panama canal by yachts.

Did you look at the marina at River Dunes? Been there several times but not in a hurricane. 360 degree protection and well maintained floating docks.

If you're going to end up being stuck in a slip nex to another sailboat, be sure to stagger the masts. I've seen destruction come from out of sync boat rocking and clanging rigging together.
